Charity of the Month | Adopt Me Rescue
by Sica Schmitz | Posted on May 01 2016
In case you hadn't noticed, we are huge fans of pet adoption at Bead & Reel. There are so many animals looking for homes and we have so much gratitude for the people and organizations who are helping adoptable dogs and cats find their perfect families.
This month we are excited to introduce Adopt Me Rescue, a non-profit, volunteer-run, foster-based small dog rescue here in Los Angeles. With a focus on "special needs" dogs, they are a dedicated group of people rescuing the sick, senior, injured, overlooked and forgotten dogs. Below we spoke to founder Laura and volunteer Ellen about what they do - and how you can help.
All month long your purchases will support this wonderful organization.
What should we know about "special need" dogs?
Senior dogs are often overlooked, but they can offer the best experience to their new owners and can often have a long time with their new families. Some love to be physical, such as hiking and going on all types of adventures. They are so grateful for a warm bed and any attention they are offered. Plus they come without annoying puppy habits of chewing and potty training!
Why should we know about pet adoption?
By going through a rescue group, where we have spent time getting to know the dogs, we can best match owner's lifestyles with the pet that would suit them most. If a match is less than ideal, we always take back our pets and would prefer they were returned to us than taken to a shelter. Above all, Adopt, Don't Shop.
What does AMR need the most help with right now from the public?
We are always in need of foster homes for our pups. The amount of foster homes we have limits the scope of our work, because without a place for them to go, we can't pull a dog from a shelter. If you can't foster, volunteering at adoption events, or by offering to do home checks of potential adopters, coordinating a mailing list, updating our website, or donating funds are all ways to get involved. Whatever your skill set, we have a need.
What can dog-lovers outside of Los Angeles do to help AMR?
- If you shop on Amazon, use Amazon Smile and choose Adopt Me Rescue as the charity to receive your sponsorship.
- Donate funds via our website so that we can rescue more special needs cases; we're a 501(c)3 charity so your contributions are tax deductible.
- Visit our website and share our adoptable dogs on social media
- Share our events to help get the word out.
- Hold a garage sale, cookie sale, or lemonade stand in your neighborhood and forward the proceeds to AMR.
- Contact us and we'll be happy to send a story and photos of one of our rescue dogs to be featured at your event.
Basically, there are a lot of ways to get involved, no matter where you are!
What is your favorite part about working with AMR?
My favorite part about working with AMR is receiving follow up emails from the adopters of the babies I have fostered. Knowing they are happy and secure is the best reward. The other fun side of my volunteer work is when the money I've helped raise funds a surgery for a needy animal who would otherwise have been euthanized.
What is your next upcoming event?
We're having a Dine Out Event at Golden Road Brewing on May 24th where a portion of all food and drink sales will be donated to ARM. It'll be a fun event because it's the same night the restaurant holds trivia. We try to have a dine out event once a month at different spots around town, you can subscribe to our events calendar here.
