Whether you're shopping for yourself or giving a gift you'd rather not be re-gifted, let Bead & Reel help put stars in your style. Here's our monthly, 12-sign guide to astro-compatibility with fashion, created by Julia Szabo, who previously wrote about the zodiac and design for Traditional Home. Enjoy!
Spotlight on ... Mercury Retro Style!
Mercury will station retrograde for most of this month, from January 5 through January 25. But don't fret, fashionistas! Although this dreaded astrological phenomenon does slow down travel and communication, it can be a blessing on the fashion front. Did you make a New Year's resolution to eliminate stuff you didn't need from your closet? Well, now is an excellent time to do just that, because Mercury Retrograde favors any activity that involves reviewing the past. Be ruthless in weeding out what you don't need, and donate it to a charity. Here's another way to gain momentum from Mercury Retro: Look to style beacons of the past for inspiration! Instagram is a wonderful way to get your #retrostyle fix, so search that hashtag for leads. The team of fashion historians at The Courtauld Institute in London - @documentingfashioncourtauld - has an amazing feed that never fails to enlighten and delight hardcore fashion lovers.
Happy Birthday Capricorn!
(December 22 – January 19)
You’re delightfully old-fashioned, with a weak spot for timeless, traditional style. Admit it: You can’t help decorating with antique wood furnishings or setting your table with vintage china, glass goblets, and cloth napkins.
You like standing tall in classic heels with a cool, contemporary twist – gorgeous vegan black pumps that are hypoallergenic and recyclable. And when it comes to dressing up, you love a ladylike look from head to toe, like your sister Capricorn fashion plate Michelle Obama, whose legendary style takes cues from an earlier FLOTUS legend, Jacqueline Kennedy.
By day, you might choose a little black dress with a refined hem that stops at the knee. And for a glamorous evening out – especially on nights when you’re the focus of paparazzi! – you’ll seduce, Capricorn-style, in a modern movie-star gown with old-school glamour. The Persephone Color-Blocked Dress by La Fille Collette has your number – especially in the classically Capricorn shade of well-aged wine (Merlot, to be exact).

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18)
This forward-facing visionary points her high heels toward the future, and adores all that is innovative and new. (Aquarian design deity Christian Dior famously invented “The New Look” – enough said.) Not for the water-bearer a handbag that everyone else carries – her cork purse has a stunning silhouette that’s ahead of the curve.
Aquarius Retro Style Inspiration: Marisa Berenson
PISCES (February 19 – March 20)
Neptunians would rather be beachcombing, and they crave barefoot comfort even when they’re not strolling by the sea. Flatter fishy feet and make waves – in and out of the water – with Indosole up-cycled flip flops, such as the stylish Double Six.
Pisces Retro Style Inspiration: Jean Harlow
ARIES (March 21 – April 19)
The fiery first sign of the zodiac is known for sporting envy-inducing hair, which just seems to look amazing without any help. But every once in a while, that crowning glory needs to be tamed with a handsome headband.
Aries Retro Style Inspiration: Joan Crawford
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20)
Bulls tend to have beautiful voices, and they love to talk – which leaves them with a vulnerability to hoarseness and sore throats. A sexy scarf helps protect the tender Taurean neck from winter winds or arctic-blast air-conditioning in cinemas and on airplanes.
Taurus Retro Style Inspiration: Audrey Hepburn
GEMINI (May 21 – June 20)
The sign of the twins logically gravitates toward adornment in pairs. Shoes and earrings aren’t the only way to get a double dose of pretty: why not double up on rings and bracelets too?
Gemini Retro Style Inspiration: Marilyn Monroe
CANCER (June 21 – July 22)
Known for her subtly elegant style, the moonchild is drawn to anything made of silver, the Cancerian signature metal. Pure understated elegance, the Baguette Cuff Bracelet provides an extra lift of empowerment, even on a less-than-sterling day.
Cancer Retro Style Inspiration: Diana, Princess of Whales
LEO (July 23 – August 22)
All that glitters really is golden for the luxury-loving lion, who loves anything gold or gold-toned, and is renowned for her regal generosity. Leonine core values converge in the brass Bastille Bracelet, which empowers the women in Delhi, India who make it by hand.
Leo Retro Style Inspiration: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22)
“Like a Virgin” is this earth sign’s siren song: she loves nature in the raw, animals free from captivity, a color palette embracing leaf greens, bark browns, sky blues, and cloudy white - and she insists on non-GMO fruits and veggies. What could be more perfectly pristine than a sweetly sexy dress made of unprocessed hemp? That’s so Virgo!
Virgo Retro Style Inspiration: Twiggy
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22)
It’s all about balance for the sign of the scales, who naturally gravitates to yoga gear both on and off the mat. This is the zodiac’s fashion fanatic, so Libra’s yoga pants must be chic enough to take her anywhere with style and poise to spare!
Libra Retro Style Inspiration: Diana Vreeland
SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21)
The most seductive sign of the zodiac can’t resist the temptation of come-hither threads, no matter what the occasion or the time of day. A maxi dress looks sexy even with sneakers – and a bedtime baseball tee will compel her lucky playmate to tear it right off!
Scorpio Retro Style Inspiration: Dorothy Dandridge
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21)
The zodiac’s globe-trotter considers her passport her most important accessory, and loves items as well-traveled as she is: pretty Fair Trade pillowcases from Rwanda or “Berlin”-inspired clogs that come from Portugal. Sadge will gladly board a plane in search of the perfect shopping experience – and to tote all her fab finds, she’ll carry a big bag that folds up small.
Sagittarius Retro Style Inspiration: Betty Grable
