The zodiac can help us navigate more than matters of the heart - it can give us guidance on style matters too. Because style matters, a lot! Whether you're shopping for yourself or giving a gift you'd rather not be re-gifted, let Bead & Reel help put stars in your style. Here's our monthly, 12-sign guide to astro-compatibility with fashion, created by Julia Szabo, who previously wrote about the zodiac and design for Traditional Home. Enjoy!
After three weeks of stationing retrograde, Mercury finally goes direct on January 25.
Valentine’s Day falls during Aquarius season, and science-loving water bearers are naturally attracted to high-tech items (as are gearhead Geminis). But during a Mercury retro phase, one must avoid buying electronic items, as there’s a high chance of malfunction. So, if you’re shopping for a special Aquarian between now and January 25, the last five days of this retro period, and you can’t avoid acquiring something electronic, make sure you’ve really done your homework before you set out to buy. But don’t let fear of a Mercury misstep totally cramp your shopping style – go hunting for clothing and accessories instead! (Bead & Reel is happy to help with this). Dining alfresco is favored during Aquarius season, so if you live in a part of the world where the weather’s warm, reserve a table at an eatery with outdoor seating.
Happy Birthday Aquarius!
(January 20 – February 18)
You’re the most ahead-of-your-time sign, which is both a blessing and a curse. You don’t follow trends, you forge new ones! But it can take the rest of us mere mortals some time to catch up with you airy creatures. Famous Aquarian trailblazers include Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, Portia De Rossi, and Yoko Ono. The fiercely fashion-forward design visionaries Cristobal Balenciaga, Mary Quant, and Paco Rabanne all were Aquarians, and all three changed the face of style forever.
You’re the Water Bearer of the zodiac, but you are not a water sign – you’re an air sign, with an ethereal aesthetic. You feel happiest when the air you breathe is fresh: indoors, you appreciate an air purifier; outdoors, wind chimes play the music of your element. You have great respect for your fellow creatures of the air, but many fashionistas still haven’t caught on that the use of feathers in fashion is just as cruel as leather or fur. You Aquarians, on the other hand, instinctively get it, so down-filled parkas are not your style; you prefer your winter jacket to sport cruelty-free, feather-free, synthetic insulation. And forget feathers as trim: On the cover of her magazine, Oprah recently rocked an ultra-glam Marc Bouwer gown bedecked in faux feathers! Oprah also champions faux fur, and that’s typical of your sign’s dedication to acting in the interest of the greater good: maintaining a high standard of compassion, ethics, and sustainability is as important to Aquarians as, well, clean air.
Gift idea: Aquarius aims to preserve and protect its element, the air, and trees do that - so a perfect gift for your Water Bearer is a T shirt by Amour Vert, which plants a tree for every shirt sold.
