Star Style | Spotlight on The February Full Moon
by Julia Szabo | Posted on February 19 2016
The zodiac can help us navigate more than matters of the heart - it can give us guidance on style matters too. Because style matters, a lot! Whether you're shopping for yourself or giving a gift you'd rather not be re-gifted, let Bead & Reel help put stars in your style. Here's our monthly, 12-sign guide to astro-compatibility with fashion, created by Julia Szabo, who previously wrote about the zodiac and design for Traditional Home. Enjoy!
Just three days after the Sun enters Pisces, the full moon of February 22 gives us all, regardless of sign, a chance to release anger and resolve crises.
As the Moon shines brilliantly in the cosmos, it illuminates individuals and groups who have been unfairly dominated – and lights the way for righting wrongs. This is a very favorable time for the oppressed to assert their dignity and their basic rights. So now’s the time to get out there and support your favorite underdog! Bead & Reel cares deeply about fair labor practices in the making of clothing and accessories, and stands firmly against sweatshops, animal cruelty, and other deplorable situations in the fashion industry. Below, you’ll find a recommendation for each sign as to an astro-compatible cause that stands up for underdogs (and undercats). We’d love to hear more recommendations from you, so please use the comments to enlighten us about more impactful ways we all can make a difference – we’re all ears!
Happy Birthday Pisces!
February 19 – March 20
You Neptunians are generous to a fault, driven to give – and give, and give! – to serve the greater good through activism and philanthropy. With its commitment to the highest ethical standards, Bead & Reel is a perfectly Piscean enterprise – and model Rachel Ford is Bead & Reel’s perfect Piscean face.
She’s committed to a vegan lifestyle, and compelled to share the fruits (and veggies!) of her journey with others, via her Instagram feed @itsrachelford and her soon-to-launch blog. Like all fashion-conscious fish, Rachel craves barefoot comfort; when Pisces natives aren’t going shoeless, you’re drawn to fashionable footwear that provides next-to-barefoot freedom (read: flats, flip flops, and sandals).
Your closet is awash in a tide of oceanic themes: greens and blues are the hues you choose, but you’re also partial to sandy tan and conch white. Your towel is the chic-est one on the beach! Shopping, for you, is a lot like beachcombing – you inevitably wind up with jewelry in the shape of seashells or sea creatures. But you draw the line at actual coral, for you wisely prefer to leave that on the reef, where it belongs. Crystals the color of sea glass, or an ocean rock pendant – that’s pure Pisces style.
All Pisceans are charitably minded, and you like combining your activist streak with your element, the sea. Advocating for - and donating money to - marine conservation comes naturally to you. Check out Oceana, whose team of e-activists (called “Wavemakers”) send out letters and petitions to protect the world’s oceans. That’s so Pisces!
ARIES (March 21 – April 19)
The color red never fails to light the Ram’s fire – happily, red is practically a neutral for a perfect pop of color in any outfit, whether it takes the form of lipstick, nail color, a clutch, a cross-body bag, or a turtleneck.
Check out: Woodstock Farm Sanctuary, the home base of a handsome sheep named Ashton (as in Kutcher), plus many other woolly cousins of the ram.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20)
The Bull is bullish on animals and creature comforts. Combine these two passions with handmade pillow cases by Jessie’s Place, featuring an elephant and a gorilla. For baby Bulls, check out the Elephant Doll, also by Jessie’s Place.
Check out: Skylands Sanctuary, where a cool calf named Freddie found his forever home, permanently safe from slaughter, after a headline-making escape and a sprint through the streets of New York City.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 20)
Yellow is the official color for the zodiac’s Twins, a sign that naturally gravitates to pairs of things. Indosole’s Print JJ Lace-ups have you covered on both fronts – they’re a pair of snazzy sneaks in a dazzling shade of golden yellow.
Check out: Tamerlaine Farm, the New Jersey animal rescue farm that’s home to a cute pig couple named Artie and Clara.
CANCER (June 21 – July 22)
Cancerians adore the non-color white because it reminds them of their ruler, the Moon. The perfect go-with-everything handbag, Angela Roi’s Moa Tote is a winning streak of white vegan leather.
Check out: The acclaimed, awareness-raising documentary film “Racing Extinction” by Oscar winner Louie Psihoyos appeals to Cancer’s love of the movies.
LEO (July 23 – August 22)
The zodiac’s regal Lion is accustomed to luxury in all things, even rainwear. With a hint of sheen, the Denim Vienna Mini Trench Coat will make a cloudy day sunny: a favorable fashion forecast for this Sun-ruled sign.
Check out: Born Free Foundation, the international wildlife charity founded by lion-loving actors Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna and their son, Will Travers.
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22)
Sweet and sexy, virginal yet experienced … Virgo is a study in contradictions. Cropped in front and demurely long at the back, the Ruffle Tank by Groceries perfectly captures her quandariness.
Check out: Little Pine, the Los Angeles vegan eatery founded by a Virgo named Moby, where all proceeds are donated to animal welfare charities.
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22)
The sign of the scales thinks everything’s prettier in pink – no surprise there, as she’s ruled by ultra-feminine Venus. So her choice of a clutch is a no-brainer: the limited-edition Amina by Elkarti, finished with flashes of fuchsia.
Check out: Humanitarian Libra’s goal is tipping the scales of justice in the animals’ favor – and that’s precisely what the Animal Legal Defense Fund does.
SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21)
As the zodiac’s most seductive sign, Scorpio rarely looks less than completely come-hither. The sexy Yuma Pencil Skirt by Amour Vert gets to the point with perfect poise, whether paired with heels or flats.
Check out: A water sign as deep and mysterious as the sea, Scorpio gladly supports the marine conservation efforts of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21)
The Archer is happiest when traveling – even while she’s grounded, her mind wanders intrepidly to places exotic and far-flung. Keep her wanderlust satisfied with high-flying fashion, such as a Study Abroad Skirt by Mata Traders (it came all the way from Nepal!).
Check out: Sadges’ symbol is half horse and half human, so they saddle up to support the equine rescue efforts of Saffyre Sanctuary.
CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19)
The goat is the zodiac’s traditionalist and loves anything made of good, old-fashioned wood, from antique furniture to contemporary accessories. Shizuku Earrings by Mata Traders have her number, as do EQO Optics’ Mariana Sunglasses, made of upcycled wood.
Check out: Puget Sound Goat Rescue, a safe haven for Capricorn’s spirit animal.
AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18)
Trend-setting Water Bearers appreciate scientific innovation in all areas of life, especially fashion. Feed their craving for style science with a high heel that’s high tech: The Classic Heel by Melissa Shoes, made of MULFLEX, a natural material that’s malleable, hypoallergenic, odorless, and recyclable.
Check out: Lizards, turtles, and snakes are often overlooked in favor of cuddlier critters – but Aquarians do things differently, so they’re proud to support the rescue efforts of Colorado Reptile Humane Society.
