ICYMI: 2017 Fair Trade Fashion Show
by Sica Schmitz | Posted on August 11 2017
Believe it or not, fair trade is not yet synonymous with chic (though I'm working to change that!). When I talk with most people about what I do in eco-friendly, fair trade, and vegan fashion, I can almost see the burlap sack flash before their eyes. They don't know (yet) that some of the most innovative and exciting things happening in fashion are happening in ethical fashion, and so three years ago I created the Fair Trade Fashion Show to share a less expected side of fair trade.
This year's event went to benefit the anti-trafficking non-profit Free the Slaves. Our ticket sales, sponsorships, silent auction, and individual donations all went towards our goal of raising $20,000 to provide holistic vocational training for trafficking survivors in the Democratic Republic of Congo and India. And together - with the support of the ethical fashion community - we raised over $31,000! I often hear critics and skeptics talk about how we can't buy our way to a better world - and, we can't - but those of us committed to creating a more caring world can use our purchasing power and our donating power to truly impact the lives of others.
I wanted to share some of my favorite runway looks to help show what eco-friendly, cruelty-free, sweatshop-free fashion actually looks like.
