Happenings - Where to find us in September

Admittedly, as the founder of Bead & Reel I pretty much always think it's an exciting time to get involved in our various projects, but this month is proving to be especially true. I'm honored to have been asked to participate on behalf of Bead & Reel in a number of upcoming sustainable fashion events along with hosting our quarterly clothing project for vulnerable women, and would love to have you join us (or continue to cheer on from afar).

If you will be in Los Angeles definitely stop by - and introduce yourself, I'd love to meet you! - and if you're elsewhere, you can follow along on our Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

I spoke earlier this year at the Art Institute of Hollywood's Earth Day Symposium on sustainable fashion and was thrilled to be asked back this month to talk to students and future entrepreneurs about how to run a sustainable business. This event is open to all and will include time for a Q&A.

I don't exclusively focus on fair trade, don't run a non-profit, don't work directly with artisans, and don't drink coffee, so I was surprised yet humbled to be asked to be the Keynote Speaker at this annual conference. I will be talking about my experience working with a variety of fair trade organizations along with the powerful role fashion plays in this growing movement.

I talk a lot about the power of clothing because I have spent my career watching it transform women. Many homeless and formerly homeless women trying to re-enter the work force face a barrier by simply not having the appropriate things to wear to interviews or potential new jobs. This can mean anything from lacking the perfect professional outfit to even lacking basic dignity items like bras and panties.

Our quarterly partnership between Bead & Reel and the Downtown Women's Center allows us to bring in the amazing women in our community - yes, you! - to help support the vulnerable women in the greater community by donating your gently-used clothing. It's an incredible thing to witness as the women in this program who have faced so much hardship absolutely light up, stand up confidently, and smile brightly with optimism just by having an outfit that makes them feel beautiful and employable.

You can contact us to receive a pre-paid shipping label or arrange a drop-off at locations on both the east and west side (so no need to cross downtown!).

Sustainable fashion can be a very broad term to mean a lot of things, so I have teamed up with Fair Trade LA to put together a thoughtful panel at this year's Green Festival Los Angeles to discuss some of the main aspects of sustainable fashion: vegan fashion, Made in USA fashion, fair trade fashion, and eco-fashion along with some of my heroes and friends.
